One in three women on the planet will be raped, beaten, sexually coerced, trafficked or otherwise abused in her lifetime.
That’s one billion women.
One billion women violated is an atrocity. But what if that number – one billion – decided to stand up and rise against that statistic?
That was “Vagina Monologues” author Eve Ensler’s main motive when conceptualizing the One Billion Rising campaign on V-day, February 14, this year. It’s a call for one billion women and men across the globe to dance and rise up against violence against women, demanding justice and an end to the horrible fact that one in three women will be violated in her lifetime.
One billion women dancing is a revolution.
I encourage you to watch the short film below about the campaign for more details and understanding on One Billion Rising: (*trigger warning for graphic material and abuse against women*)
According to onebillionrising.org…
ONE BILLION RISING IS:
- A global strike
- An invitation to dance
- A call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture ends
- An act of solidarity, demonstrating to women the commonality of their struggles and their power in numbers
- A refusal to accept violence against women and girls as a given
- A new time and a new way of being
It’s a time for you to take an active stand on violence against women. I dare you to join the movement. In fact, I’m going to beg you to do it for me as February 14th is also my birthday. If you want to give a gift, give your participation in this event.

It’s time that women and men worldwide say, “Enough! The violence ends now.”
